Course Outline

JIB Gold Card Pathway 1

Pathway 1 is a full pathway package that covers every stage required to take you from your very first step in the trade through to becoming a fully qualified electrician — recognised by the industry with the prestigious JIB Gold Card.

It is the ideal starting point for mature adults with little to no experience, who want to achieve both your EAL 1605 Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation and your EAL 1605 Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Installation, part time in the evenings.

Whether you are beginning your career in the electrical industry or making a complete career change. This pathway provides a structured, step-by-step journey that ensures you gain the essential knowledge, practical skills, and workplace competence to succeed in a safe classroom environment with expert led tutors.

Requirements

To be eligible for this pathway you must:

  • Must be 19 years or older.
  • Have little to no prior electrical installation experience.
  • Not have an Electrical Installation Diploma.
  • Be seeking to start or change careers into the electrical industry.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in English, Maths, and Science.
  • Have an engineering mindset or a genuine interest in the trade.
  • Commit to at least 80% attendance during scheduled classroom learning.
  • Be prepared to start working in the industry in an electrical role that covers the full commercial and light industrial scope of work before commencement of the NVQ stage.

Before beginning Stage 1, you will complete a Discovery Call and Interview to confirm your eligibility and readiness to proceed.

Stage 1 – EAL 1605

Level 3 Technical Diploma in Electrical Installation (Knowledge)

You will receive your Brian Scaddan Welcome Pack and your Technical Diploma Knowledge Pack. This will include an induction session at Brian Scaddan’s Premium Training Centre,

In Stage 1, you will complete the EAL Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation, building the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to progress to Stage 2 – EAL 1605 NVQ in Electrical Installations (Performance Stage)

What’s involved in Stage 1:

  • Develop a strong foundation in electrical principles, installation techniques, and regulatory compliance.
  • Complete the EAL 1605 Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation, including:
    • Attending 40 weeks of structured evening classroom learning
    • 9 online multiple-choice examinations (including the City & Guilds BS:7671 Wiring Regulations).
    • 5 practical assessments.
    • 1 scientific principles project.
  • The City & Guilds BS:7671 Wiring Regulations is included in the Pathway 1 package and is delivered as a 3-day daytime classroom course with examination.
  • All assessments are invigilated and conducted under controlled conditions.
  • Exam & assessment resits are permitted.

Stage 2 – EAL 1605

Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Installation (Performance)

Once you have successfully completed Stage 1, you will be enrolled onto the EAL 1605 NVQ in Electrical Installation.

You will receive:

  • NVQ Performance Pack, providing full guidance and requirements for completing the EAL 1605 Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Installation.
  • A dedicated assessor to support you in building your ePortfolio, offering expert advice and feedback throughout your EAL 1605 Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Installation journey.

 

It is important to note that you must be employed in a full-time role. This is to ensure that you can gather the necessary workplace evidence for your EAL 1605 Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Installation. You must be working in a commercial or light industrial environments to ensure you can cover all required units.

 

What’s involved in the EAL 1605 Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Installation:

  • Build a portfolio of evidence demonstrating your competence in all required areas.
  • Provide workplace evidence such as photographs, videos, job specifications, drawings, and installation records.
  • Undergo on-site observations by your assessor.
  • Participate in professional discussions to confirm your understanding and application of industry standards.
  • Demonstrate compliance with the City & Guilds BS:7671 Wiring Regulations – You must hold a current City & Guilds BS:7671 Wiring Regulations qualification before your NVQ can be signed off.
  • Completion window: Maximum 18 months, with flexibility to finish sooner.

 

Who is involved:

  • You – Responsible for gathering and submitting all required evidence.
  • Your Assessor – Guides you through the process, conducts observations, and assesses your portfolio.
  • Internal Verifier – Ensures all assessment decisions meet awarding body standards.
  • Awarding Organisation (EAL) – Oversees the final verification and certification process.

 

EAL 1605 Level 3 NVQ in Electrical Installation Unit Overview:

  • Health and safety in the electrotechnical environment.
  • Organising and overseeing electrical work activities.
  • Terminating and connecting conductors.
  • Inspection, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems.
  • Diagnosing and correcting electrical faults.
  • Electrical systems design.
  • Electrical installation work in dwellings.
  • Work on commercial and light Industrial systems.

Stage 3

AM2 End-Point Assessment

The final stage is the AM2 End-Point Assessment, undertaken at an approved NET Services centre. This is a practical and knowledge-based assessment designed to test your occupational competence as an installation electrician.

 

What’s involved in the AM2:

  • A full range of timed practical tasks covering installation, inspection, testing, and fault-finding.
  • Verification of your ability to work safely and in compliance with industry regulations.
  • An assessment of your understanding and application of electrical science and principles.

 

Additional Information:

  • The AM2 is booked separately and is not included in your Pathway 1 package.
  • We can assist with booking your AM2 assessment at the South-East AM2 Centre (Portsmouth), North-West AM2 Centre (Warrington), or Midlands AM2 Centre (Nottingham) — sister companies offering quicker and more convenient booking options, including a 10% discount on the AM2 cost.
  • Successful completion of the AM2 is required before applying for your JIB Gold Card.

Course Duration

Completion Timeline

Stage 1 – 12 Months.

The EAL 1605 Level 3 Diploma in Electrical Installation is designed to be completed over 12 months, during which you will attend structured evening classes and complete all online examinations, practical assessments, and the scientific principles project.

Stage 2 – 18 Months

The EAL 1605 NVQ in Electrical Installation is designed to be completed within a maximum of 18 months. Learners may however finish this stage sooner by gathering and submitting workplace evidence at an accelerated pace.

Stage 3 – 3 Days

The AM2 End-Point Assessment must be booked before the end of the NVQ’s maximum 18-month completion period. The AM2 is a three-day assessment, undertaken at an approved NET Services centre.
